Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: First Duty

Carabella began her duties at this luxurious residence today. She woke up while the sky was still slightly dark. When she woke up, she was actually confused about what happened to her last night. She clearly remembered being trapped in that terrifying world that left her unable to find a way out. Her father who continued to torture her, beating her until she couldn't get up, making her whole body still tremble to this day. However, strangely, the nightmare disappeared from her in an instant. Even though she was sure at that time she was locked in a small, dark, and silent room.

Now she didn't want to think about that nightmare anymore. Her right hand patted her cheek briefly to remind her that starting today, she would have to fulfill her duties in this house as a housekeeper. She immediately moved quickly out of her room and began her activities in the kitchen.

Fortunately, Carabella has quite reliable cooking skills, having lived independently for many years. As a teenager, she had to learn to cook because her father wanted her to be provided with food at all times. This is what made Carabella accustomed to her current job.

Carabella cooked various food menus, she put all her dishes on the dining table one by one while waiting for the owner of the house to wake up.

"I didn't expect you to prepare breakfast so early in the morning."

Hearing the homeowner's voice made her body immediately freeze. She turned around for a moment, bowing her head. "You're awake, Jefferson."

A wide smile spread across his handsome face. "Of course, I'm curious to see what your cooking is like." He sat down on the dining chair, gazing at the corn soup, sautéed green vegetables, and several side dishes laid out on the table. "Can you cook?"

"Why? Are you actually doubting me?"

"I thought you wouldn't be able to cook such a wide variety of delicious dishes." His eyes focused on the sweet woman, who still had her head bowed. "I told you yesterday not to bow your head in front of me."

"Don't be too quick to praise me. If you find all my cooking isn't delicious, don't blame me."

Jefferson held back his laughter while holding a spoon. He tasted one by one the menu that Carabella cooked while nodding. He didn't expect Carabella to be able to cook such delicious food that it made his heart blossom.

"Your cooking is no less delicious than the spaghetti I made last night."

Carabella widened her eyes, not expecting anyone to openly praise her cooking for the first time. Even her own father had always found fault with her cooking, making her feel insecure about it until now.

"Really? Aren't you lying?"

"Why would I lie? I don't want to add to my sins." After tasting this overly delicious meal, Jefferson devoured his breakfast with gusto. "I really like your cooking. But why do you look so insecure?"

"Because I was never praised."

"What?!" Jefferson immediately slammed the spoon on the table, surprising Carabella.

"I've never been praised. I've always had to cook for my dad, but he always says my cooking isn't delicious."

"Your father is really a jerk!"

Carabella laughed awkwardly at the curse uttered from the perfectionist's lips. It was the first time she'd heard someone curse just to defend her, which made her quite happy.

"Why are you laughing? Is something funny?"

"You've never sworn before. You've always been calm and a perfectionist."

"Should I be calm when someone keeps criticizing me?"

"No."

Jefferson took a sip of corn soup, staring down at the soup in his bowl with a haughty gaze. "I told you from the start. If you wanted to work with me, you wouldn't be crying anymore. And now you've succeeded in satisfying me."

"Even though I only cooked this simple breakfast for you."

"Thank you, Ella." The intense look in his eyes made Carabella unable to control her pounding heart.

"Thank goodness you like it. I'll cook an even more delicious menu."

"Don't be so self-conscious every time you cook. Also, remember to hold your head up high when you talk to me."

It was time to return to the professional world. Jefferson entered his office with his assistant, dressed in a sleek, expensive suit. He took off his jacket and handed it to his assistant.

"So, what about Mr. Daniel? Does he agree to our offer?"

The assistant handed the tab to his boss. "His assistant told me earlier that he's still considering your offer."

His right hand clenched tightly. "Even though I've already given him the best offer."

"By the way, regarding Carabella–"

Jefferson snapped his fingers. "I wanted to tell you about her too. You have to keep this a secret from everyone."

"What do you want to do to her?"

"Of course, making him my personal assistant at the office."

"Really?!" The assistant screamed involuntarily while covering his mouth with his palm.

"Why are you overreacting so much? Are you afraid of getting fired suddenly?"

"Actually, what you said earlier was what I was most afraid of. But why did you suddenly want to make her your assistant at the office? She already works as a housekeeper at your house."

Jefferson folded his arms and stared coldly at his assistant. "I don't want her working only at home. I want her to serve me in the office as well."

"Then what about me? Are you going to fire me now?" the assistant asked, panicking, tears welling in his eyes.

"Don't worry, you'll still be my assistant too." Jefferson patted his assistant's shoulder casually.

"But wouldn't everyone be suspicious if you had two assistants in the office? Especially since you hired a woman who's just as beautiful as your fiancée! Do you want people to think you're being unfaithful to your fiancée?"

A sinister smile spread across his handsome face. He turned away for a moment, gazing out the window at the city view. "Only a crazy person would think that of me."

"Jefferson, this is for your reputation, actually."

"You can't stop me, Raul. I'll keep Carabella by my side. Because I promised to protect her."
