Chapter 10 - Something more

MASON

I didn't have a great relationship with my godmother, she's just my godmother because apparently, my birth mother made her that but I had never been displeased to see her as I was now.

"Perfect timing, mom," I muttered under my breath, unable to hide my irritation but she didn't seem to hear me as she happened to be seething in anger.

"You've got to be kidding me, Mason," She began, and I could barely hold my annoyed groans from erupting. "You can't possibly believe that this wench here is innocent."

"Watch your mouth, Mother!" I rebuked almost immediately, pissed off by the way mother spoke about Isobel especially in her presence. I glanced at Isobel and she had her head lowered, it annoyed me that she couldn't stand up for herself, except when it comes to me.

Mother followed my gaze to Isobel and she gasped loudly, her face contorting into a sneer, "What has come over you, Mason? Has the change of environment affected your sense of judgment?"

"I'm perfectly fine, mother," I said dismissively and I noticed how mother glanced at me disappointedly before glaring at Isobel.

"I hope you don't regret this, son." She said, stepping out, "I just hope this doesn't turn around and bite you in the ass."

I really hope so too. I was known for my rationality, and careful decision making skills, I had never been the one to act impulsively but when I saw Isobel in that position with all the odds stacked against her, I knew I had to do something.

I hated her father with every bone in my body, so that meant that I should hate her too, right? But I simply couldn't. There was strong connection between us, enticing yet frightening. I wanted nothing than to unveil her. I wanted her to show me her true self. I knew that there was more to her than she allowed to be seen.

I ignored my mother and allowed her to leave, because I didn't want to allow myself to think about the repercussions of my action, I just wanted to get to the bottom of it.

"I should leave," Came Isobel's subtle voice and just as I was about giving her a response, I heard a guard's voice in the distance.

"Who are you and what are you doing here?" He asked.

"Just exactly who Mason needs now," The person on the other end replied and I immediately deduced who it was.

"Let him in," I called out.

"Hey buddy," Logan, my beta and friend, came into view with his usual charming smile, "I came as soon as I got your mind-link" He gently patted my shoulder, "That's not a sweet way to tell me you've missed me," He teased.

"Don't kid yourself." I said with a frown but deep down, I was thankful that he showed up. Logan was one person I could always count on and that was why I called him to help with the investigation.

Yes, I knew I was taking it a little too far but I couldn't help it.

"And who is this pretty angel," Logan, ignoring me, walked up to Isobel with his playboyish smile then he took her hand in his and place a kiss on it.

I've known Logan for the longest time and I knew how he acted around women, so I shouldn't have felt my blood boil when he placed a kiss on her hand. I shouldn't have also felt a pang in my heart when I noticed a light blush on her cheeks.

"I'm Logan and aside from an angel, what can I address you as?" He smiled charmingly and I almost puked.

"I'm Isobel," She replied in the most subtle tone as possible. What the hell? I never knew Isobel could sound so meek and tamed. Whenever she was with me, it was like she couldn't wait to tear me into pieces but with Logan, she's harmless.

"Beautiful name for a beauty." Logan complemented, "I—"

I couldn't take it anymore. I had do something so I interrupted, stopping him right there. "Now's not the time, Logan, I called you here for serious business."

I didn't know why I was getting so worked up but I didn't care. As long as the two of them weren't in close proximity, I'd be okay.

"Alright," Logan stepped away from her with his hands above his head like he was surrendering but I knew Logan, the man wouldn't rest.

Then he turned to me, "Now what's the serious business." He asked, sounding annoyed that I had interrupted his little talk with Isobel, "You said you won't be staying for long and you already need my help? Any body you need me to take care of?" He smiled as he cracked his knuckles and flexed his muscle.

I knew he was showing off for Isobel!

"Someone framed her for murder." I finally revealed the true reason why I called him, "and I need your help to get to the bottom of it."

"Why do you care?" Logan asked, knowing the history between my step family and I.

Logan's question took me by surprise so much so that I could barely come up with a suitable response, "I- " I stuttered.

"I'm his sister!" Isobel chimed in, and for some reason, it felt like she was trying to build a wall between us. To make our relationship clear! For some reason, it hurt.

"Oh," Logan said with a knowing smile, "You're the sister I've heard so much about?"

Logan was lying with a straight face because I have never spoken about Isobel. Heck, I didn't even know Simon had a daughter before now.

"Step sister," I felt the need to make that clear.

"Still the same thing," Logan smiled, unwilling to back down.

"Don't start, Logan." I berated him and then turned to Isobel "Leave us." Thankfully, she left without a fight.

Once I was certain that Isobel was out of earshot, I said, "This pack holds a lot of secrets and I must uncover them all."

"Again, why are you so interested?" Logan asked, "Just take revenge and leave."

Yes, I wanted revenge but now, it felt like I wanted something more. Something that shouldn't belong to me.
