Chapter 11 - Speeds and Swords

Danny woke up with a massive headache and an influx of information downloaded into his brain. He remembered everything his clone did while he went on patrol. 'It'll take a while to get used to this.' Danny thought to himself as he sat up slowly. Danny did his morning ritual before going downstairs for breakfast.

Danny found both his parents there along with Jazz. They were talking about their plans. His parents said that they were gonna study more about the ice Danny-2 made for them. Jazz said that she had tutoring today and that she would be out all day. "Morning family." Danny greeted as he prepared himself a bowl of cereal.

-

"Morning Danno. How was it both sleeping and going out on patrol?" Jack asked.

-

"Yeah, Aranea said that Ghosts and Spirits use cloning to get more work done. How did that feel?" Maddie asked her half ghost son.

-

"At first it hurt when I woke up, but while I was preparing for the day, it subsided. I just have memories of what my clone did." Danny answered his mother and father.

-

"What did your clone do?" Jazz asked

-

"Stopped a jewelry store robbery by talking to the ghost and hiring her to make jewelry for Theryon and Sid. Then I saved a yeti noble's daughter. After that I stopped a bank robbery that had hostages by cloning myself to match the amount of criminals in the bank." Danny explained what all he did for each of his clones actions and that took an hour.

-

"Danny, Honey, maybe you should make a journal for all the stuff you do. That way we can just read it when we have the chance, and you can learn from it when you can." Maddie told her son.

-

"That's a good idea. We can put it in the database of ghosts and call them 'The Phantom Files'." Danny told his family. "Anyways, I heard that you were still examining my ice from yesterday. Why do you need to?" Danny asked his parents.

-

"Son, your ice doesn't seem to want to melt or break." Jack explained all the ways they tried to affect my ice. "The closest we got was shooting it with electricity, but the amount of power we had to use made the device blow up."

-

"Yeah, it was almost 500 volts of electricity. Do you know why that is?" Maddie asked her son hesitantly.

-

"Maybe it had to do with the cause of my half-death. There was a lot of electricity when the portal opened. I'll have to ask Aranea." Danny said between bites of his cereal, oblivious to the pale faces of his family about him talking about his death.

After Danny was finished with his bowl, someone knocked on the front door. Danny went to answer it and found Kim and Ron. "Hey you two, what are you doing here so early?" Danny asked his two friends standing before him.

-

"Well, you agreed to have Wade check your specs and he wanted to do it as soon as possible." Kim explained.

-

"Yeah. I want to see how fast you can go." Ron said.

-

"Alright, how are we doing this?" Danny asked, wondering about his specs himself.

-

"Well since you want to keep your powers a secret, we need to go somewhere abandoned and Wade found an island that was evacuated because of a volcano." Kim explained. "It's empty and surrounded by water. Plus, you can always portal us home afterwards."

-

"That works for me. Let me tell my parents and call Sam and Tucker and I'll be good to go. Come inside." Danny moved aside to let Kim and Ron inside and went to inform his family.

"I'm gonna go test my speed and strength on an abandoned island. Just to let you all know." Danny informed his family.

-

"That's fine. Just be careful, son. Crashing on water can hurt worse than crashing on land." Jack said, subconsciously rubbing his back.

-

Kim walked into the kitchen. "I just talked to Wade, he said he can get us a ride, but we'll have to wait an hour." She told Danny.

-

"Perfect, that gives me time to call Sam and Tucker and to put on all the outfits I got from the yetis." Danny ran to his room from a confused Kim and Ron. Jazz filled them in.

Danny went to his room to do a facetime with both Sam and Tucker. They both answered quickly. "Hey, I'm going to an island to test out my powers, do you think either of you can come?" He asked his oldest friends.

-

"Sorry Danny, my parents won't let me go anywhere. I was grounded for trying to hack the school's computer system." Tucker said as he checked his bedroom door. "I can't talk long or my mom will hear me, bye." He hung up.

-

"Can't, Sorry. My parents are taking me to a gala this weekend. I'm gonna hate it. Hope you have fun testing your body to its limits." Sam said just before her mom called for her to leave. "Gotta go, bye." She hung up and Danny shut his laptop.

It was ten minutes after that before Danny came out of his room transformed and in what looked like a dress. "I liked this one the best. What do you think?" He asked, swishing the bottom of the dress side to side.

-

"It's a dress." Ron said bluntly.

-

"And? It was an outfit I got from rescuing a little girl from a gang of old bullies." Danny retorted.

-

"You shouldn't accept rewards as a hero, Danny." Kim told the half ghost.

-

"They said it was part of their culture when someone finds a lost child. If I didn't make a reasonable 'demand' I would have had to keep her." Danny told Kim. "Do you want to see the others?" He asked the group before him.

-

"Sure." Said everyone in various tones.

-

Danny cycled through all five of his new outfits and ended with his new armor. "I like the dress-like outfit and the armor the best." He said as he transformed back into his classic jumpsuit. "Which ones did you like?" He asked his family and friends.

-

"Yeah, I have to agree with you. The dress and the armor are the best." Ron said before anyone could say anything. "I do hope you're wearing pants under that though."

-

"I am wearing pants under it." Danny said with a smile as he transformed back into his human form. "Where do we have to meet our ride?" Danny asked Kim who was looking at her communicator.

-

"At the Middleton Airfields. We should probably make our way there soon if we don't want to keep them waiting." Kim said and the trio of heroes made their way out of the house.

-

"Have fun on the island." Jack said as the heroes left the building.

=

Wade used his connections to have a wireless control private plane that he landed on a tarmac. Danny, Kim, and Ron unloaded some equipment from the back.

-

"Danny, you better be really fast. I don't want another ride in a driverless plane. You can take us every time we need a ride for a mission." Ron said to the half ghost.

-

"You would need to take regular rides for me to keep my cover, plus I don't know if it'll be safe for you two if I go my top speed. That's why we're here." Danny told Ron.

-

"Danny's right Ron. We can't rely on his powers for every little thing." Kim told her blond friend as she carried a piece of machinery. "Wade, why do we need all of this stuff?" Kim asked her computer kid.

-

"Because they are all needed to test out the strength of Danny's ghost form." Wade answered the redhead. "Some of it is also for checking his take off speed."

-

"Okay, I think that's the last of it. Wade, you'll need to tell us how to put it all together." Danny said, using his cloning power to carry most of the tech off the plane.

-

"Will do." Wade said to the half ghost.

=

After Kim, Ron, and multiple Danny's finished putting together the machinery that Wade wanted to use, they got started. Danny, in his human form, went into a pod that Wade said was a gravity chamber to test how strong Danny's legs were under stress.

-

"Ready whenever you want to start, Wade." Danny said from inside the pod.

-

"Got it. Starting now." Wade said from a screen inside the pod. "I'm starting with 1.5 earth's gravity." He said as he pressed a few buttons on his keyboard.

-

Danny could feel the change in gravity but could still stand straight. "I think you should up the gravity some more." He told the computer child.

-

"Don't push yourself Danny." Kim told the half ghost, worriedly.

-

"I'm not, Kim. I just feel like I can take more than what I'm being given." Danny told his red headed friend.

-

"If that's so, let's give you 3 times earth's gravity." Wade said with a smile in his voice.

-

"Make it 5 times. Humans are capable of surviving in a gravitational field of 4.6 times the gravity of earth. Researchers even say that it is more practical to select an exoplanet that has a gravitational field of 3 or 4 times earth's gravity." Danny said, giving a show of his obsession with space.

-

"It's your test." Wade said as he put in the data.

-

Danny could definitely feel the change in gravity and the slight strain of his muscles. He tested some jumps and could only get off a couple of inches before rocketing down to the ground again. "We're almost at my limit. What's the max in this thing?" Danny asked Wade.

-

"10 times earth's gravity." Wade answered. "Do you want me to put it on 10 times gravity?" He asked, starting to get worried for the half ghost.

-

"Yeah, I want to see if that'll have me on my knees." Danny told Wade. "Then we can see if I can fly while in 10 times gravity."

-

"Okay, but tell me if you start feeling pain and I'll turn it off right away." Wade said as he put the information into the machine.

-

Danny feels his knees buckle under him but forces himself to stay up. "I can definitely feel the strain now. Let's see if I can fly." He told his friends as he transformed into his ghost form and lost all of the strain his body was feeling. "That's strange." Danny said, mostly to himself.

-

"What's strange?" All three of Danny's friends asked in unison.

-

"I don't feel the gravity anymore. That's what." Danny answered and floated in the air.

-

"That is strange. Maybe your ghost form has more strength than your human form. Or maybe it follows a different set of physics than humans do." Wade mumbled to himself as he pressed a few buttons on his keyboard. "You can go out now, the gravity is off."

-

Danny did as he was told and got out of the pod. "That was fun. What's next?" He asked the computer child as he transformed back into a human.

-

"We should test his flight speed now." Ron suggested.

-

"I'm fine with that. Let's do that." Danny said to the group, getting a 'Boo-ya' from Ron.

-

"That is what I was going to say. I didn't have time to make enough tech to test everything I wanted. We'll have to do this again sometime." Wade said. "Danny, all you need to do is wear a tracking belt in your ghost form and start flying." He explained to the half ghost, who transformed as requested.

-

"Okay. Can we test something I had an idea for? I want to see if you can still track me if I'm intangible." Danny said his idea to the computer child. "So I can disregard wind resistance while flying." He defended his idea.

-

"Ooh, yeah, he could reach the speed of sound without air resistance, right?" Ron asked.

-

"Technically yes. It's only in theory right now. The speed of sound is the speed at which sound waves propagate through a medium, and it's calculated by the medium's properties, not the object moving through it." Wade explained to Ron. "If Danny goes intangible, he won't be affected by the medium, in this case air, and reach speeds regardless of it. Go ahead and test it, Danny." He said and Danny went to get the belt.

-

Danny buckled the belt around his waist. "How do I turn it on?" He asked.

-

"The button on the buckle." Wade answered.

-

Danny pressed the button on the buckle and the belt lit up. "Okay, I got it on. Can you see it?" He asked Wade.

-

"Yeah, you're good to go." Wade said to Danny.

-

Danny went intangible and made sure to spread it to the belt. "Are you still reading me?" He asked the computer kid.

-

"Yeah. I now want you to start flying while tangible to get that reading before we check out the speed while intangible. That way we can see both your top speeds." Wade said to the half ghost.

-

"Got it." Danny said as he went tangible. "Where's the machine to catch my take off speed?" He asked Kim and Ron.

-

"Over here." Kim led Danny to the machine.

-

"Okay. Wade, my plan is to shoot up into the air then move away from the island. Will that work with you?" Danny asked.

-

"That's fine. I was thinking the same thing. That way you don't crash into a boat or something. Take a comm and I'll tell you when to stop going up so you don't get seen or crash into a plane." Wade explained how the device worked while Kim handed Danny a comm, which he put in immediately.

-

"I'm ready." Danny said, interrupting Wade's explanation of the device. He turned to Kim and Ron. "You two should probably back up some, just in case." The two global heroes complied and took a few steps back from Danny.

Danny started going up and up and up, waiting for Wade to tell him he was safe to go forward. Wade called it and Danny blasted off away from the island as fast as he could. Danny could feel the wind blasting his face and body and he soon found himself over another body of land. Danny kept going until he was met with a body of water again. He stopped after a minute over the water.

"How fast was I going?" Danny asked into the comm.

-

"You were going nearly 600 miles per hour. That's insane." Wade said in Danny's ear. "That's nearly as fast as a private jet." He said in awe.

-

"Cool. Now let's see how fast I can go while intangible." Danny said as he went intangible. "Ready Wade?"

-

"Yeah, go for it." Wade said in excitement.

-

Danny took off again, this time without the wind slashing at his face. Danny reached the body of land almost in an instant. He stayed over the body for another couple seconds and was back over the water near the island. Danny kept going and saw the island over the horizon and approaching fast. When he was over the island, he stopped and lowered himself to the ground.

"How fast was that? That felt like half the time." Danny asked as he reached the ground

-

"Nearly 1,200 miles per hour. That's nearly the speed of military fighter jets." Wade said on a screen that was on a piece of machinery.

-

"That's nearly a Mach right?" Kim asked, proud of the half ghost.

-

"That's over a Mach, Kim. Danny reached speeds that could break the sound barrier. It's insane is what it is." Wade told the redhead, whose jaw dropped and stared wide-eyed at her friend.

-

"What if he used his ecto-blasts to propel himself while going intangible?" Ron asked as he and Rufus ate some Bueno Nacho that he got before their departure.

-

"We can test that another day." Danny told Ron. Scylla and Charybdis were being extra cuddly, proud of Danny's achievement.

-

"That's fine. We can do this next week when I'm better prepared." Wade said. "Danny, do you feel fine right now? Not out of breath or anything?" He asked the half ghost.

-

"No. Why." Danny asked back.

-

"Another function of the gravity chamber is that it can check vitals of those inside. I checked yours and your heart rate was really slow." Wade said, looking worried.

-

"Well, you have to remember that I'm half dead. I'm lucky that I still have a heartbeat." Danny said to his computer friend. "Do you think I can test a few things here?" Danny asked Kim.

-

"Like what?" Kim asked.

-

"Seeing how far I can spread my aura." Danny answered.

-

"Oh, okay. That shouldn't be a problem. Why'd you think of it?" Kim asked.

-

"I just have this weird feeling being here and I wanted to see if I could find the source." Danny answered Kim.

-

"Is it the same as the one in Wisconsin?" Kim asked, curious.

-

"Not really. It kinda feels like the portal in my house. I don't know how to explain it." Danny answered Kim. "It feels like it's coming from the volcano." He said, narrowing his eyes at the mountain.

-

"You think there's a portal in the volcano?" Wade asked as he worked his keyboard. "I don't see any of the weird energy that is in Amity Park and Wisconsin. I don't doubt you about what you feel, but does that mean there's not a ghost portal in Wisconsin?" He asked.

-

"I'm positive there is a portal in Wisconsin, I'm not so sure about here though. I said that it felt like the portal in my house. Not just any portal. It feels familiar, but I don't know why." Danny tried to explain.

-

"We feel it too. Not like the portal exactly, but similar." Scylla and Charybdis said in unison.

-

"Well go on then. Don't keep us waiting." Ron said, pumping his fists in excitement.

-

Danny took a deep breath and released his aura. It seemed almost easy for Danny to do so. 'Could it be the same thing as with my ice?' He thought to himself. Danny could feel something pull on his aura and he focused in that direction. It was coming from the direction of the volcano.

"I feel something, but I might need to get closer. Are you two fine watching the machinery or do you want to come with me?" Danny asked the two global heroes, knowing the answer.

-

"Obviously I'm coming with you." Kim said with her fists on her hips. "What, you think I can't handle a little dormant volcano?" She said.

-

"I know you can. I was just giving you the option. Mainly Ron, though." Danny tried to calm her.

-

"Oh, if that's the case. I'll stay here." Ron said with Rufus agreeing with him.

-

"Oh Ron." Kim said, exasperated. "Fine. Let's go." Kim told Danny walking toward the volcano.

-

"Do you really want to walk or do you want to fly?" Danny asked Kim.

-

"Sure we can fly." Kim answered and Danny hooked his arm through her's and they were off in the air. "Can you leave Scylla or Charybdis with Ron, so I know he's safe?" She asked and Danny nodded. Charybdis flew off to hang out with Ron.

-

"I can feel it coming from the side of the volcano." Danny said, still spreading his aura towards the volcano. Danny could see a cave near the top of the mountain. "Right there, in that cave." He said as he flew both himself and Kim to the mouth of the cave. "Careful, we don't really know how stable it is after the eruption." Danny said before they landed.

-

"I get that. I'm not new at this, Danny." Kim said in a huff, even if she carefully examined the ground, walls, and ceiling as they walked inside the cave.

-

"I know, that was mostly for myself." Danny told her. "Remember, I am new at this. I don't have your experience or confidence in this kind of thing." He said as they reached the end of the cave. Danny touched the center of the wall. "This is where my aura is focusing." He said to Kim.

-

"Okay, let's look for a hidden button or lever to reveal whatever it is you sense." Kim said as she looked around the cave.

-

Danny thought for a moment. 'If I was a ghost, how would I go about hiding something for later?' He thought to himself. "I don't think there's going to be a button or lever." Danny told Kim. "This is a ghostly object, maybe they just phased it in?" Danny said as he made his arm intangible and reached into where his aura was concentrating.

Danny waved his arm until he came into contact with something. He grabbed hold of it and pulled. "Found something." Danny told Kim, just as the back wall became dust. "Did something." He said to the redhead. He was holding what looked like a ripcord that connected to the ceiling.

-

"See, there's always a lever or button thing with these types of adventures." Kim said smugly.

-

"Yeah, yeah. I bow to you supreme intellect." Danny said as he gave Kim an exaggerated bow, to which Kim blushed.

-

"L-let's just investigate what you are sensing and leave." Kim said as she pushed past Danny. "We don't want to be late for dinner tonight, right?"

-

"Right, maybe I should lead? We don't know what kind of ghost traps are here." Danny told Kim as he rushed ahead to catch up with her.

They were in a fiery chamber lined with gilded bricks and a skylight that glowed a bluish-green light that wasn't natural. There were depictions of a battle taking place on the walls. There was a pedestal with a sword in it. The handle glowed a soft dark green and purple.

-

"There seems to be a description on the pedestal. I can't make it out." Kim said and pointed to where she saw the engravings.

-

Danny walked over to where she was indicating and saw English. "It's in Gholric. I only see English and this place is too far from an English speaking country as well as too old." He said to the redhead. "It reads as 'Only the person who can do anything can do the kimpossible can lift this sword.' Weird that it says your name right?" Danny said after he translated the inscription.

-

"Maybe I should try to pull it out?" Kim asked, staring at the sword in the stone. "Maybe I'll be queen of Camelot." She chuckled out.

-

"Go ahead and try." Danny said to Kim, curious about why it says her name. "Give me your Kimmunicator first, though. I want Wade to check out the depictions of battle on the walls." He said and she did.

-

"That's a good idea. Do that before I pull it out in case the place starts to crumble." Kim said as Danny recorded all of the room multiple times with different camera features.

-

"Go ahead. I got everything." Danny said as he pocketed the communicator.

-

Kim reached out with both of her hands and grabbed the handle. The air started to swirl around her and Danny decided to record everything that was happening to Kim as she slowly pulled out the sword. As she did so, the green started to absorb into Kim's dominant arm. The air kept swirling faster and faster around Kim that it was almost making the recording useless. When Kim almost had all of the blade out of the stone, there was a bright flash and the sword was gone.

"Where'd the sword go?" Kim asked as she looked around.

-

"Check your arm, I saw some of the energy go into your dominant arm. If you don't find anything, try thinking about summoning it?" Danny suggested.

-

Kim looked at her right arm and screamed. She showed Danny the tattoo of a sword on her wrist. "What do I do? My parents won't let me get my ears pierced. No way they'll let me have a tattoo." She started panicking.

-

Scylla and Danny were on her in an instant. "It's okay. I recorded the whole thing. We can just blame the magic. Plus it might be like my spider tattoo in that it can disappear when I want it to." Danny tried to calm his friend down. "Try to make it disappear." He suggested as he and Scylla were rubbing her back.

-

"Okay." Kim said in a shuddering voice. She closed her eyes and a moment later, the tattoo disappeared from view.

-

"Look, it worked." Danny told her, holding her hand still so she could see it. He was ignoring how soft they were for the moment.

-

Kim took some calming breaths at feeling Danny hold her hand and opened her eyes. She couldn't see the sword tattoo anymore and gave Danny a shaky smile. "What does this mean now?" She asked, her voice sounding calmer than her appearance.

-

"I think this means you get a sword that's magic now." Danny told her in the gentlest voice he could muster.

-

"I have a sword that's magic." Kim repeated to herself. "I don't know how to use a sword." She said in a scared tone.

-

"I'm sure Aranea will help you with that. Also my mother. She taught me some sword skills. I'm sure she'll teach you." Danny told Kim as he pulled her into a hug.

-

"Are you sure?" Kim said into Danny's neck.

-

"Positive. I know for certain that Aranea will if I tell him to." Danny assured Kim, holding her tighter.

-

"Okay." Kim said, separating herself from Danny and wiping tears that fell on her cheeks. "Let's get out of here." She said, walking to the exit of the chambers and into the cave.

-

"Okay. Wait a moment, I want to try something." Danny flew up to grab the ripcord handle from the ceiling and pulled in intangibly to the exit. As he did so, the wall reformed and Danny put the handle back where it was. "Good. Now no one will know we were here." He said to Kim.

-

"Why do you not want people to know we were here?" Kim asked, confused.

-

"That way we can have a secret that is just between us." Danny answered as he linked arms with Kim. "Ready to fly again or if you want to climb down, I could make a slide with my ice." Danny started to ramble, but Kim stopped him.

-

"Flying is alright. Ron is probably starting to get bored and him plus machinery don't mix." Just as she said that, an explosion could be heard from down the mountain. "We should hurry to make sure he's alright." She said as Danny started flying to the area where the explosion came from.

-

Danny and Kim landed in front of Ron, who was hiding behind the gravity chamber with soot all over himself. "You alright Ron?" Danny asked, worried for his blond friend.

-

"Nothing injured." Ron said as Rufus climbed out of his pocket and blew on Ron to get the soot off.

-

"Go wash yourself off while Danny and I disassemble the machinery and put what's left of it back in the plane." Kim told Ron, who nodded and went to the water.

-

When Danny was sure Ron couldn't hear them Danny asked. "Are you not going to tell him about the sword?"

-

"Not right now. I want to wait until after I tell my parents." Kim said to Danny.

-

"Okay, it's your sword, but we should come up with a cover as to how we got to where the sword was." Danny told Kim. "Maybe say Wade had us come here to test out some invention of his and my Ectopi found it?" Danny suggested.

-

"That could work. It reveals the Ectopi, but not your powers." Kim nodded as both she and Danny took apart the gravity chamber.

=

Kim, Ron, and multiple Danny's got all, or what's left, of the machinery in the plane and were sitting in the plane ready to leave.

-

"Ron, Kim and I decided that we are going to say that us being here is Wade wanting us to test some invention. That way I can keep my powers secret. Are you cool with that?" Danny asked the blond boy.

-

"Totally. I get it. What do we say about the sword you found in the mountain?" Ron asked. "Wade said that there was a sword that Kim pulled out and Danny then turned off the Kimmunicator." He said.

-

"I didn't turn the Kimmunicator off." Danny said as he pulled out the Kimmunicator out of his pocket.

-

"Anyways, we'll say that Scylla and Charybdis told us to go investigate." Kim told her best friend. "That way we can keep Danny's powers a secret."

-

"Uhuh, okay. So, what happened to the sword?" Ron asked. "Wade said Danny recorded you pulling it out, but I don't see it with you."

-

Kim looked over at Danny, who shrugged. Kim showed her wrist and made the tattoo appear on it. "You have to keep this a secret. The sword went into my arm." She told Ron.

-

"Woah, awesome. Are you going to have Aranea check it out when we get home?" Ron asked.

-

"Yeah, I didn't want to release it, thinking some kind of effect will happen." Kim answered Ron. "Now, what's wrong with the Kimmunicator?" She turned to Danny who was trying to turn it on.

-

"I don't know. It won't turn back on." Danny told Kim as the plane took off.

-

"I don't know either. It's strange though. Maybe the energies from the sword chamber fried it? Maybe it's haunted now." Wade joked after he popped on a screen in the plane cabin.

-

"Don't jinx it." Danny said to the computer child.
