Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: Messages From Tomorrow

The team crouched in the shadows of Nova Juba's lower sectors. Smoke and ash drifted over the narrow streets, carrying the city's constant hum of desperation. Above them, the lights of the Quantum Bridge pulsed faintly in the distance, a reminder that someone—something—was watching.

Kai wiped the sweat from his brow, his mind still racing from the night's escape. "We need to analyze the signal," he said. "If we don't… we won't survive the next move."

Lira nodded, setting up a portable console. "I've never seen anything like this. The frequency patterns aren't just complex—they're alive. It's almost as if the signal is… anticipating our moves."

Milo leaned against a wall, chewing on a protein bar. "Anticipating your moves? What is this… a psychic fax machine?"

Kai shot him a look. "Focus, Milo."

Milo grinned. "Fine. But if this signal kills us, I want it on record that I told you it was a psychic fax."

Ignoring him, Kai connected to the portable Quantum Bridge interface. The stream of data was chaotic—lines of energy readings, unknown waveforms, and strange repeating codes. He frowned.

"Look at this," he said, pointing. "The pattern repeats every 7.6 seconds… but there's a hidden offset. It's almost… human."

Lira's eyes widened. "Human?"

Kai nodded. "I think someone—or something—is trying to communicate. And it's not random."

Milo whistled. "So, the machine's talking back to us? Great. I always wanted to be friends with a giant death ring of metal."

Ignoring him again, Kai began decrypting the code. Letters started to appear, forming a cryptic message:

"The path is broken. Trust the unexpected. One will betray."

Lira gasped. "One will betray… Kai, this isn't just a warning. It's a prediction."

Kai's eyes narrowed. "A prediction? Or manipulation?"

Milo groaned. "Oh great. Predicting betrayal now. That's just what I needed. My friends are gonna stab me in the back. Fantastic."

Kai ignored Milo and turned to Lira. "We need to find out who within the corporation could be working against us. And fast."

Lira's fingers flew across the console, scanning internal security feeds. "There's someone moving unusually near the Quantum Bridge's main control. An insider… but they're careful. Too careful."

Kai frowned. "Could it be Raze?"

Milo snorted. "Ha! Big scary guy? I'd pay to see him betray anyone. Not happening."

Kai ignored him. "Maybe… maybe not Raze directly. But someone on his team could be compromised."

Lira bit her lip. "We need allies we can trust completely. And right now, we only have each other."

A sudden flash of light from the portable console drew their attention. The signal had changed—lines of text scrolling too fast to read. Then, a final message appeared:

"Kai Adeyemi… you are not alone in this. But not all you see is truth."

Kai felt a chill run down his spine. "They know my name," he whispered.

Milo groaned. "Yeah, thanks Captain Obvious. I was hoping we'd survive without being famous first."

Lira ignored Milo and stared at Kai. "This… this isn't random. Someone—or something—is guiding you. But they also warn of betrayal. We need to be careful. Very careful."

Kai swallowed, the weight of the situation pressing on him. "Then we prepare. If the corporation comes for the signal, we need to be ready. And… we trust each other. No secrets."

Milo raised his hand dramatically. "Scout's honor, or whatever that means."

Kai and Lira shared a brief, tense smile. Milo's humor, even under life-or-death pressure, was strangely comforting.

Somewhere in the shadows, unseen by them, a figure moved silently, watching their every move. And for the first time, Kai realized that the real danger wasn't just the machines or drones… it was the people they thought they could trust.
