Chapter 7 - The Supreme Alpha

MASON

"What's wrong with me?" I questioned myself for the umpteenth time, still unable to come up with answers.

When I decided to move to Shadow pack, the last thing on my mind was finding my mate because honestly, I had given up on that a long time ago. I had accepted my brutal fate that not all wolves were blessed with mates.

But never in my life had I expected to find my mate in the pack I despise so much and not only that, the mate in question happened to be my step sister! How wonderful.

'If we hadn't had sex that night, then she wouldn't have been on my mind this much.' I muttered inwardly.

'You're doing a bad job convincing yourself. It's not just about the sex. There's a connection between you too,' Rufus, my wolf mocked.

Rufus was mad at me for keeping Isobel at arm's length and the only reason why he was still holding himself back was that he couldn't feel Isobels's wolf yet.

That was still a mystery. She's an adult wolf and all wolves shifted on their eighteenth birthday so why was it different with her?

'Get out of my head!' I sneered, knowing it was impossible to get him out of my head so I simply shut him off.

As much as I hated to admit, Rufus was actually making a point. Not to brag, but I have had my fair share of sex and none of my partners stuck with me, unable to leave my mind. What was it with her? She's a mystery I so badly want to solve.

Was it the fact that she blatantly rejected me even when I knew that she had been rejected my her mates not once but thrice? Shouldn't that make her crave for her mate? I couldn't pinpoint it but something about her interested me and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get her off my mind.

The fact that she's Simon's daughter should've been enough reason for me to stay as far away as possible from her but it only seemed to further entice me. The best fruit was always forbidden, right?

Isobel can try to lie but I knew she felt the undeniable chemistry between us so why did she try to run? Was the fact that I was her mate and step brother scare her so much?

Speaking of running, that night, while taking a stroll, I overheard the not-so subtle whispers of a female omega wolf. "I must help Isobel escape!"

"Isobel must leave this pack tonight. I'll distract the guards at the border to enable her to escape," The she wolf said.

Call me stupid but a plan like that should be a secret, shouldn't it? But the she wolf spoke as loud as possible, it was almost like she wanted me to hear her.

"Who's there?" I called out, to make my presence known, not that it was needed because I was clearly not in the hiding.

"Oh," the she wolf smiled, not one bit surprised by my presence, "you're here!" She lowered her gaze in what seemed like shyness. "I didn't notice you earlier."

I eyed her from top to bottom, not enjoying the energy that radiated from her and I took my leave. I stood in the corner, waiting for her to leave and then I went to the border gates.

But contrary to what the she wolf said to herself, she didn't go to the border gates. It was like she had no intention of doing so, she simply wanted me to hear her plans so I dismissed the guards and stood waiting. Not long after, Isobel showed up, bag in hand, ready to flee. Such coincidence!

The whole thing seemed strange but I didn't have the time to think about it as all that mattered in that moment was to stop her from leaving even if it meant locking her up in the dungeon.

My thoughts came to an abrupt halt when I heard loud voices. My first thought was to stay out of it because I had already experienced much drama than I bargained for but on a second thought, I decided to go down and take a look.

The last thing I had expected to see was two guards, roughing pulling Isobel and calling her all sorts of names but the only one that stuck to me was a murderer. Isobel, a murderer? This girl attracted problem every where she went.

I calmly followed the commotion to the town square where members of the pack and the council of elders sat with my mother. This look pre planned. What the hell was going on?

Isobel knelt down with her head lowered but I could tell she was in tears. She looked desperate for help, her expression showed her innocence but nobody seemed to believe her. It was as though everyone had already accepted that she was indeed a killer.

"…She tried to run away on realizing that she couldn't hide her evil deeds anymore!" Mother's voice rang out. "Isobel Maya Smith is responsible for the death of the two students who were burnt alive and so she must be executed!"

Mother's declaration made the crowd erupt into loud whispers and I knew I had to step in.

"What the hell is going on here?" My voice was calm but loud enough to draw the attention of everyone.

"Son!" My mother called out excitedly as though she'd been waiting for me, "Come here," She beaconned, "Ophelia here is a cold blooded killer."

"I wasn't asking you!" I shut her off, walking towards Isobel, and when I was close enough, I asked, my voice sounding softer than I intended, "what's wrong?"

Contrary to how pitiful she looked, Isobel glared at me, then let her eyes scan the crowd before lowering her head. It was obvious she didn't like my attention in public.

"She must be executed!" An elder chimed in with a scream. "A killer must die by execution!"

"Quiet, Adolphus! We don't want you bursting into several tiny pieces now do we?" I lazily replied and that instantly shut him up.

"I, Mason Gray, the supreme Alpha will decide how to punish Isobel!" I declared loudly and Isobel's terrified gaze instantly met mine.
