Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: The Broken Sky

The sky above Earth had forgotten its color.

Where blue once stretched endlessly across the horizon, a heavy gray haze now ruled the heavens. Ash clouds drifted slowly across the skyline, swallowing the sun and leaving the world beneath it dim and restless.

Below that dying sky stood Nova Juba.

A massive city of steel towers and flickering lights, built after decades of climate disasters forced humanity to rebuild its civilization. Drones hummed through the air delivering supplies while crowded streets buzzed with exhausted people trying to survive another day.

Food was rationed.

Clean water was expensive.

And hope had become a rare luxury.

Kai Adeyemi walked through the crowded lower district with quiet steps, his hands buried in the pockets of his worn jacket. Around him, screens on tall buildings flashed endless warnings about rising temperatures and declining resources.

Global Emergency Protocols Remain Active.

He barely looked at them.

Everyone already knew the truth.

Earth was running out of time.

Kai turned a corner and the towering structure of the Quantum Bridge Institute rose before him like a giant machine touching the clouds.

It was the most advanced research facility on the planet.

And the only place where scientists still believed they could save humanity.

Security drones scanned his ID as he entered the facility.

"Technician Adeyemi," a robotic voice announced.

"Access granted."

Inside, the building felt like another world.

Bright white lights replaced the dim streets outside. Scientists in clean uniforms walked quickly between laboratories, carrying tablets filled with complex calculations.

Kai moved quietly among them.

Most people barely noticed him.

To them he was just another technician fixing cables and maintaining systems.

But Kai saw things others didn't.

Patterns.

Errors.

Possibilities.

He reached the central laboratory floor and stopped.

In the middle of the massive room stood the machine that had become humanity's final hope.

The Quantum Bridge.

A giant metallic ring nearly fifteen meters tall, surrounded by layers of glowing energy coils. Blue currents of power flowed through its structure like lightning trapped in metal.

The machine hummed softly.

Powerful.

Unstable.

Beautiful.

It had one purpose.

To send information instantly across space, allowing humanity to explore distant planets and possibly find a new home.

Kai walked toward the control station and began checking the system logs.

Most of the senior scientists had already left for the night.

The lab was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lines of data scrolled across the screen as Kai monitored the machine's energy levels.

Then he frowned.

Something didn't look right.

A small fluctuation appeared deep inside the system code.

Kai leaned closer.

"That's strange…"

He typed a few commands into the console.

Numbers shifted.

Energy levels adjusted.

But the fluctuation didn't disappear.

Instead…

It grew.

The lights in the laboratory flickered.

The Quantum Bridge emitted a low vibrating sound.

Kai froze.

"That shouldn't happen."

He quickly entered another command to stabilize the system.

His finger hesitated for a moment above the keyboard.

Then he pressed Enter.

For one second…

Nothing happened.

Then the machine exploded with light.

Energy surged through the metallic ring as the entire laboratory shook violently.

Alarms screamed across the facility.

Red warning lights flooded the room.

Kai stepped back in shock.

"What did I just do…?"

The screen in front of him flashed rapidly.

A new message appeared across the monitor.

UNKNOWN SIGNAL DETECTED.

Kai's heart began to pound.

The Quantum Bridge was designed to send signals…

Not receive them.

The system processed the incoming transmission for a few seconds.

Then the message appeared.

Four simple words.

YOU CONNECTED TOO EARLY.

Kai stared at the screen.

His mind raced with questions.

Where did the signal come from?

Who sent it?

And how was that even possible?

The Quantum Bridge pulsed again with deep electrical energy.

Somewhere inside the machine…

Something had awakened.

And Kai had no idea yet that this single moment—

This tiny mistake—

Would soon decide the fate of the entire human race.
