The secondary lab hummed with energy as Kai, Lira, and Milo worked feverishly. The Quantum Bridge pulse continued to flicker, a silent reminder that danger wasn't far behind.
Then the doors banged open with a force that made the entire lab vibrate.
"Enough hiding," a deep, commanding voice boomed.
Kai's stomach dropped.
Standing in the doorway was Commander Raze Okoro, his tall frame filling the entryway. His eyes were cold, calculating, and filled with suspicion.
"You're trespassing in a restricted area," he said sharply. "And you've tampered with the Quantum Bridge."
Milo jumped behind Kai. "Relax, beefcake. We're just… uh… testing the building's defenses. Yeah, that's it."
Raze's eyes narrowed. "I don't tolerate jokes. Step aside, now."
Lira stepped forward, her tone calm but firm. "Commander, we're not criminals. This machine is receiving a signal… something extraordinary. Kai made a mistake, yes, but it might save humanity."
Raze laughed, a short, bitter sound. "Save humanity? You're just children playing with fire."
Kai clenched his fists. "Then why don't you try listening instead of threatening?"
Raze's face hardened. He reached for the security console, ready to lock them all down. But Milo, quick as ever, pulled a cable free, causing the system to spark. "Oops! My bad!"
Raze froze, surprised. Kai seized the moment. "Follow me," he said, leading the team toward a hidden maintenance shaft.
Milo whispered behind him, "I like him already. That guy's fun to outrun."
The team ran through narrow corridors, sparks flying, alarms screaming, as Raze followed relentlessly. Outside, security drones began sweeping the halls, their scanners red and unforgiving.
They reached a service elevator, but it was locked. Raze caught up. "You can't hide from this facility," he growled.
Kai's eyes darted to a maintenance ladder leading to the rooftop. "This way!"
As they climbed, the air grew colder, filled with smoke from broken circuits. Milo muttered, "If we survive this, I'm writing a memoir. Chapter one: Don't mess with security giants."
Kai shot him a look. "Focus."
They reached the rooftop and paused, gasping for breath. Below, the lab glowed like a dying heart, the Quantum Bridge pulsing ominously.
Raze caught up, standing at the edge. "This ends now," he said.
Kai took a deep breath. "It ends when we survive," he replied.
Suddenly, a drone appeared overhead, scanning the rooftop. Milo grabbed a nearby pipe and smashed it against the drone, making it crash into the adjacent wall. Sparks flew everywhere.
Raze's eyes widened slightly. For the first time, he seemed impressed by their resourcefulness.
Kai turned to Lira. "We need a plan. We can't stay here."
Lira nodded, scanning the surroundings. "There's a maintenance chute that leads to the lower city sectors. If we move fast, we can lose the drones and regroup."
Milo groaned. "Lower city sectors? Great… I love dodging explosions while running into filth."
Kai ignored him. "We move together. No one gets left behind."
As they descended the chute into the shadows of Nova Juba, Raze watched from the rooftop. Something in his expression shifted. He didn't approve, but he didn't strike them down either.
This wasn't over… but for the first time, Kai realized that survival meant forming unlikely alliances—whether Raze liked it or not.
