Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Lockdown and Shadows

Red lights bathed the Quantum Bridge Institute in an eerie glow, reflecting off polished floors and shattered glass. The alarms screamed louder, echoing like war drums.

Kai sprinted down the narrow corridor, Milo hot on his heels. Sparks from damaged panels showered the floor, and the hum of drones overhead sounded like angry hornets.

"This way!" Milo shouted, pointing toward a maintenance exit.

Kai barely had time to follow. His mind raced, trying to process the impossible signal from the Quantum Bridge. But survival came first.

A sudden metallic clang echoed behind them. The security drones had spotted them.

"Great," Milo muttered, grinning nervously. "Nothing says fun like angry flying death machines."

Kai ducked under a low beam as a drone's scanner swept past. "We need a plan," he shouted.

Milo shrugged. "Plan? Who needs plans when you've got style?"

Kai groaned.

Then a voice cut through the chaos, deep and cold.

"Stop them."

Two massive security officers, clad in black combat armor, blocked the hall ahead. One of them moved like a predator, calm and unstoppable. Kai's stomach dropped.

The taller officer spoke, his voice sharp. "Technician Adeyemi. You're coming with me. No mistakes."

Kai's mind clicked. This was Raze, the facility's head of security. Everyone in the lab had feared him, and now Kai understood why.

Milo grinned. "Oh boy. First villain encounter. And he's got muscles. Love it."

Kai ignored him. He scanned the corridor—exit doors were sealed. Sparks and broken panels gave a faint glow, highlighting a maintenance ladder to the upper level.

"Up there!" Kai shouted, pointing.

Raze's eyes narrowed. He moved faster than Kai expected, pushing Milo aside with terrifying ease. "You can't escape," he said.

Milo yelped and stumbled but caught himself. "Yeah, well, you didn't see this coming!" He pulled a small EMP device from his backpack, tossing it at a drone overhead. The drone sparked and fell, crashing to the floor.

Kai climbed the ladder, Milo scrambling behind him. Raze followed, his heavy boots echoing ominously.

Kai reached the top platform and peeked through the metal grating. Below, the lab was chaos—sparks, alarms, and falling debris. The Quantum Bridge pulsed wildly, as if alive.

"Keep moving," Kai said, panic and determination warring in his chest.

Milo panted, gripping the ladder. "If we survive this, I'm asking for a medal… or at least snacks."

Kai ignored him. Ahead, a side exit led to a narrow catwalk that extended to a service elevator. It was their only way out.

As they reached it, Raze's shadow fell over them. "Going somewhere?" he growled.

Kai's mind raced. He noticed a loose panel near the catwalk. "Milo! Now!"

Milo shoved the panel. Sparks flew. The catwalk shuddered. Raze's heavy step slipped slightly—but he recovered, his glare cutting through Kai like a blade.

Kai and Milo leaped onto the elevator platform just as the catwalk collapsed behind them, plunging into the lab below.

Raze stood at the edge, fists clenched. "This isn't over," he growled.

Kai didn't answer. He pressed the elevator button. The doors closed just as alarms intensified.

Inside the cramped metal box, Milo flopped against the wall. "We just survived the scary guy… and the lab almost ate us. I feel alive!"

Kai stared at the elevator wall, heart pounding. "That wasn't just survival," he muttered. "That was a warning. They know about the signal. And they'll come for us… hard."

Milo nodded, suddenly serious. "Then we better make sure they're the ones who don't survive."

Kai finally allowed himself a grim smile. For the first time, he realized the Quantum Bridge accident was bigger than he imagined.

And surviving tonight was only the first test.
