Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: Spark of Alliance

The elevator shuddered as it descended, carrying Kai and Milo away from the chaos of the main lab. Sparks flickered along the metal walls, and the distant hum of drones reminded them they weren't safe yet.

Milo wiped sweat from his brow. "Well, that was fun. Who knew almost getting fried by a drone could be exhilarating?"

Kai didn't respond. His mind was already racing, thinking about the strange signal from the Quantum Bridge and the warning message: "You connected too early."

The doors slid open to the secondary lab, smaller but cluttered with advanced equipment. And there she was—Dr. Lira Sen, leaning over a holographic display, completely absorbed in her calculations.

Kai's first thought: She looks calm… too calm.

Lira looked up at them with sharp green eyes that seemed to measure every detail. "You two survived the main lab?" she asked coolly, though there was a spark of curiosity in her gaze.

Milo immediately broke the tension. "Barely. But don't worry, I brought snacks… well, metaphorical snacks. You know, encouragement."

Lira raised an eyebrow. "I see. Humor is your weapon?"

Kai stepped forward. "Dr. Sen… the Quantum Bridge… it's receiving a signal. Something—somewhere—it shouldn't."

Her eyes widened slightly. "Receiving a signal? That's impossible. We've been running diagnostics for months. There's no… wait… you mean…" She paused, scanning the system. "You actually accessed it?"

Kai nodded. "By mistake."

Milo grinned. "That's me. I call it the 'miracle mistake method.' Works every time."

Kai shot him a glare. Lira, however, studied the monitor closely, her fingers flying over the console. "No… these energy readings… they don't match any terrestrial patterns. Kai, where did you access the system from?"

Kai hesitated, then explained the sequence of commands he had entered. As he spoke, Milo leaned on the console, clearly bored but attentive.

Lira's gaze softened slightly. "You're… not supposed to know this yet. No junior technician should ever have done what you just did."

Kai swallowed. "So it's dangerous?"

"Dangerous?" Lira repeated, her tone suddenly sharp. "It could destroy the facility… or worse. And whoever is behind the Quantum Bridge might not want anyone—especially outsiders—to know."

Milo leaned closer to Kai and whispered, "So, we're already on the list of 'people to eliminate.' Fun."

Kai ignored him. He looked at Lira. "We need to understand the signal before they trace it. Or worse, shut it down."

Lira nodded. "Agreed. But we'll need a plan. And allies."

Kai's stomach tightened. They had survived drones, alarms, and the threat of Raze. Now… they had the corporation itself against them.

Lira gestured toward the side console. "Help me analyze the waveform. Milo… can you patch into the secondary security feed?"

Milo saluted dramatically. "Aye aye, captain of chaos!"

Kai and Lira worked side by side, decoding the signal while Milo navigated the security system. The pulse from the Quantum Bridge grew stronger with every passing second, and with it, a growing realization:

This signal wasn't just a fluke.

It was intelligent.

It was a message meant for them.

Kai met Lira's eyes. "We're not just technicians anymore. Whoever sent this… they're counting on us."

Lira's expression hardened. "Then we better not fail."

A low hum reverberated through the lab, the Quantum Bridge pulsing in the distance. Outside, the world was still chaotic, but inside, a small team of unlikely allies was forming.

And somewhere in the shadows, the first whispers of betrayal and danger began to stir.
