Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Fredrick and the strange figure of a man walked towards a shed at the back of the house, Eva followed, confused and eager to know what kind of discussion doesn't happen in the house.

Entering the shed, Fredrick closed the door behind him.

"Now will you tell me why the hell, so much money dropped from your account?" The man asked. Eva just listened from the other side of the shed, out of sight

"I didn't want them to suspect anything. How do I stay home and not engage in conversations with them whatsoever? Always keep them at arm's length? I just wanted to take them out. How was I supposed to know this would happen?! God, give me a break Ronan!" Fredrick retorted.

Ronan pinched the bridge of his nose slightly and let out a deep sigh. He then held out hid hand as if expecting something. Fredrick reached into his coat and pulled out a Folder with a few signed files in it, handing it to him.

"What was that for?" Ronan asked. "It is a bunch of documents, scheduling the date I spilt the property in court and some other stuff." "What is this?" Ronan pulled out a file waving it to his face.

Fredrick quickly recognized the file. "It's a file Eva gave me for something about school; no biggie" he shrugged

"And why is that mixed with your important documents?"

Fredrick stopped to think. Why was Eva's file in that folder? He was sure to have arranged all his things before leaving his study.

Fredrick "It doesn't matter, is there anything else I need fill out?" Fredrick asked

"For now…" Ronan flips through the folder, checking if all the required papers were present. "…No. I will be back to collect all the other files, to give it to the lawyer, later; we will soon be rich, brother" Ronan smirked, placing his hand firmly on Fredrick's shoulder.

They both talked for a while, cracking jokes and catching up before leaving the shed. Eva listened to everything they had said. "And here I thought the devil had horns" She thought. Every good image Fredrick had left in Eva was destroyed at that very moment.

......

Eva stood behind the shed for a while so as to not arouse suspicion before walking back to the house.

There was a subtle knock on the door. It was 7:35 pm; Fredrick was in his study room, Lizzy and Luke would be in their rooms, leaving her mother doing one or two things in the kitchen. Rose's eyes darted towards the front door on hearing the doorbell ring. She opened it and saw Eva standing.

"EVA! Did you walk home alone? Did the neighbors see you? And what happened to Lizzy?" Her mom asked without asking her to come in. She looked her mom and nearly wanted to cry. For some reason, she had a bit of hope; maybe she and her mother were getting closer but it looked like she was wrong. The more she seemed to trust people, the more people disappointed. Eva held her head and walked past her mom "I can't remember anything that happened, the doctor said I might not have some of my memories intact since I may have most likely hit my head."

she said as she walked up to her room. she shut the door behind her, locking it. She went straight to lay on her bed, throwing herself unto the soft mattress. Her head hurt a bit but she was too tired to pay mind and in a matter of minutes she slept off.

The next morning, she woke up earlier than usual, got dressed for school and went straight to Fredrick study.

A knock sound was heard; Fredrick opened the door to find Eva dressed in her school clothes.

"You just came back from the hospital, aren't you going to take a rest?" he asked in an uncaring tone

"I am good, I came for my papers" she said not meeting his gaze

Fredrick went in and brought the papers and handed it to her, Eva collected it "thanks" she said before she left

She walked down stairs and headed to the door

"Where are you going? you just got back from the hospital" her mom said with a questioning look

"I am fine"

"You know I can drive just you to school"

"Have you driven me to school before?" Eva asked and silence followed.

"Good, so don't act like you care, I am fine" she said with a deep breath and walked out the door walking down to school.

.....

During break she went looking for Jayne and expected, she was in her empty classroom, Eva walked towards are and dropped the papers in front of her, she picked up a chair and sat beside her

"He signed it" Eva said showing her his signature, Jayne looked at it and smiled

"Well, what I need isn't here with me. I'll need you to follow me to the central library after school" Jayne said.

"What is wrong? Your face looks dull, did you sleep?" Jayne asked.

"Yeah, just got onto some issues during the weekend"

"Really? What kind of issues?"

Before Eva could reply the bell rang, "I will tell you about it at the library, she said leaving Jayne and taking the paper with her to her next class.

It was brutal but another day of school had been conquered, School was over; Jayne and Eva were walking down the street to the central library. When they got in, Eva was amazed, it was beautiful and big

Jayne noticed her face "Haven't you ever been to a library before?"

"Nah, except school libraries"

Jayne and Eva spoke has they entered a door to a new section

"Jayne!" a girl came running towards Jayne with excitement written all over her face, hugging her,

"I missed you.". The girl turned to Eva and asked "Who's the chic?". Jayne took the Liberty to introduce them

"Everest meet Eva, my bestie from school and Eva meet Everest; she is more like a sister to me" Eva smiled warmly and extended her hand for a handshake. Everest smiled back and shook it.

"You're really beautiful." she complimented, not taking her gaze off Eva's face. Eva's face flushed and she smiled "T-thank you"

"Alright, I know her reasons for coming but she came with you, how may I be of help?" Jayne started to explain what she needed to Everest. After a while, Everest and Jayne went to work. Eva looked around the library while they were busy. She was walking through the aisles when her eyes fell on a book, she walked towards the Shelf and picked it up.

The book has a deceiving look; it looked like it had a soft surface but it was hard and very dusty. she blew the dust off the cover and it further piqued her interest. It looked like some kind of ancient texts that should be found in only museums or ancient ruins; much less a library.

"Do you like reading?" Everest asked Eva, glancing at her from her desk

Jayne replied "Actually, she does; she's a smarty pants" before entering another room filled with machines.

"What is this?" Eva asked giving the book to Everest.

"This was brought to the library just recently, it's called 'The birth of disaster'."
