"What? The boss is already married and even has a son," Julie mumbled, her voice dropping with disappointment. "There is no chance for me to get his attention. With such a gorgeous wife, why would he look at someone like me?"
Summer looked away, pretending to rummage through the files on her desk. 'This has nothing to do with me,' she reminded herself. 'Gideon's life… his wife, his child… none of it has anything to do with me anymore.'
Yet, the ache refused to leave her heart. A while ago, when she heard Mr. Hill had been punished, she had even assumed that Gideon had done that to avenge her. Somewhere deep down, a foolish part of her believed he still cared about her. But now, she thought how laughable that idea was.
'Why would he go against someone influential in the city for me? Who am I to him?'
"Summer, look." Julie's voice drew her back to the present. "The boss has come out of his office to receive them."
